A Daily Choice

Each morning we have the choice: to wake up and face the day in service of the Lord or to wake up and face the day in service of ourselves. But it’s amazing that so few of us are even aware that the choice is there. We get up in the morning and start our hectic schedule. We rush from task to task, bombarded by the events of life that seem to sweep us up and carry us away with them. Minor catastrophe after minor catastrophe pummel us as we seek to keep moving, keep breathing, and keep going. Yet, there is more to life than a chain of events. And it starts each day with a choice.

A Daily Choice

When we rise in the morning, we actually do have the opportunity to make the conscious choice of starting our day with the Lord and spending the rest of our day with Him. So often, the business—or busy-ness—of life starts from the moment we wake up. As a result, we often rush into our day without more than a cursory howdy-do to the Lord and a quick prayer asking Him to help us through the day.

But what if we started the day with more than that?

What if we started the day in conversation with the Lord? What if we greeted the Lord before we got out of bed? What if we spent time reading and studying this Bible and seeking out His voice in His Word? Would it matter? Would it make a difference in our day? I believe it would.

The Lord longs to communicate with us—not just in passing prayer, but in true conversation with us. He wants us to know Him, to love Him, and to trust Him. He wants to know us and spend time with us. And if we take the time to start our day with Him and invite Him to take part in our day, then He will. Psalm 145: 18 tells us: “The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.”

But there’s more to it than that. We NEED God. We need Him, day in and day out. We need Him more than we need anything else. The Bible tells us time and again that man cannot live on solely the food we eat. We need the Word of the Lord. We need to listen to Him, to hear His Word and to study it. He will sustain us and arm us with the strength, hope, and love to face each day and all the things that come our way.

When we start our day with the Lord, talking with Him in prayer and taking time to study His Word, He will be with us. He will come in and talk with us. Christ tells us in Revelation 3:20: “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”

Tomorrow morning, I challenge you to choose to spend your day in service to Him. Set your alarm 30 minutes early. Use that time to start your day in prayer with the Lord and studying the Word of the Lord. Invite Him to spend the day with you and to use you for His will. I know you’ll be happy you did.
