Calm Within the Storm

Life is a wild and crazy ride, and many times it feels like chaos is the norm. Let’s face it: with work, home, family, and all the pressures and stresses of this world piled high on our plates, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. In fact, it’s easy to feel completely and utterly crushed by the weight of it all.

I’m certainly no exception to this feeling of being overcome by the pressures of daily life. Some days it feels as though the whole weight of the world is sitting entirely on my shoulders and there’s no end in sight.  It’s simply one of the downfalls of being human. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that Christians will have it easy or that the pressures of daily life will suddenly become a piece of cake. Yet, there is hope.

For me, there is a peace about my time with the Lord that is more precious than gold. It refreshes me, and it rejuvenates me. It’s not something that is easy to explain, but it is as real as anything I have ever known. When I take time out of my crazy day to read the Bible, pray, and even study through a devotional, my day is easier. It is not a magic cure-all by any means. The pressures and strains and the craziness is all still there. But it somehow lightens my load through those brief moments of calm within the storm. And today that is enough for me.

“And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.” Matthew 8: 24-26 KJV
